Technical Information:
Defined by innovation.  Driven by performance.  Developed with a passion for the great outdoors.

Techlite lenses:  To create our lightweight Smith Techlite lenses, we use the highest quality borosilicate glass ground down to our desired thickness and polished by precision machinery.  Then each lens is chemically-tempered in a nitrate bath for increased shatter resistance of any lens material available and is significantly lighter than standard glass lenses.
Carbonic Lenses:
Our Smith Carbonic lenses feature our Tapered Lens Technology (TLT) and provide a shatter resistant front line of defense against dust, flying debris and other airborne irritants.  Ultralight and optically precise, they don't just meet ANSI standards for optical clarity and impact resistance, they exceed them.
Grilamd Frame:
In theory, Grilamid is a rugged, resilient frame material that is specially formulated for flex, impact, strength and dimensional stability.  In practice, it's tough enough to withstand the most aggressive physical punishment your body is willing to endure.
Acetate Frames:  Our handcrafted frames combine fashion details with durable acetate, and feature wire core temples for easy adjustability and a secure, comfortable fit. Each frame is individually hand crafted through a 17-step process and polished for a refined, precise appearance.
Hydrophilic Megol:
Our rubberized nose pads and temple ends are made from moisture absorbing hydrophilic Megol.  As you sweat the Megol becomes tacky, keeping the sunglasses positioned comfortably on your face, even during the most rigorous sports activities.
Tapered Lens Technology (TLT):
Visual distortion occurs when light waves hit an aggressively curved lens causing it to refract or distort.   This distortion results in a reduction of optical clarity.  Smith's Tapered Lens Technology corrects the distortion inherent in standard 8 and 9 base lens curves by progressively tapering the lens toward the outer edge.  This way, light waves are delivered straight to your eye.  The result?  Zero distortion.
Polarized Lens:
(marked with *) Light waves traveling freely can vibrate in any direction.  When light strikes a horizontal surface, such as water, sand or pavement, it vibrates horizontally, creating glare.  Our Waterman's Series polarized lenses with their Horizontal Glare Reduction (HGR) filter are designed specifically filter out 99% of reflected glare.  The end result is enhanced visual acuity and reduced eye fatigue.
Protection from the Sun:  Solar radiation is formed by visible and invisible light waves.  Measured in nanometers, it has three wavelengths that reach and affect your eyes:  Ultraviolet, Visible Light and Infrared Radiation.  Ultraviolet exists at 200-380nm.  Studies show that long term exposure to UV may cause eye diseases, including cataracts.  In addition, short term exposure can cause temporary conditions such as "snow blindness".  Ultraviolet radiation can be divided into three categories.  UVC (200-290nm) is absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere and never reaches your eyes.  UVB (290-320nm) is a  physically painful form of ultraviolet radiation.  These are the suns "tanning rays" which are absorbed by the cornea.  Exposure to UVB can temporarily damage the cornea. UVA (320-380nm) rays are absorbed by the lens of your eyes.  The resulting damage heals slowly, if at all.  About one percent of all UVA rays penetrate the retina, which can not repair itself.  All Smith lenses provide 100% protection from dangerous UV radiation.
