How to Stay Safe While Riding a Motorcycle

Safety should be your top priority while riding a motorcycle. While these vehicles can be a lot of fun to ride and have amazing gas mileage, there are also serious safety concerns surrounding potential accidents. Here are some of the best ways you can protect yourself while out riding.

Wear Protective Gear

Since motorcycles do not intrinsically provide as much protection as cars do, motorcyclists' first line of defense against injuries is protective gear. Helmets should be worn at all times, and visors are critical for keeping debris, bugs and precipitation from striking the eyes. Goggles, both with and without prescriptions, can be ordered if you require corrective lenses to drive. Body armor for motorcyclists is available and can offer substantial protection. Leather is another material of choice as it offers protection against rain and wind, so you are less likely to be uncomfortable. It also features excellent abrasion resistance, which can drastically reduce the severity of an injury.

Keep Your Bike Maintained

Keeping your motorbike properly maintained is another way you can reduce your safety risks. This includes taking it into a qualified, trusted mechanic for regular maintenance check-ups and getting problems investigated promptly. Be certain quality parts are used during repair or additions as well. Faulty motorcycle parts can result in serious injuries on the road. Before setting out at any time, and especially before a long trip, inspect your bike for any possible issues. Prevention is much less costly and time-consuming than the aftermath of a serious incident.

Obey Traffic Laws

The final step to protecting yourself as a motorcyclist is to obey all traffic laws. You are much less likely to be in an accident if you are not speeding or driving recklessly and properly obey signals. Many states have specific traffic laws that apply to motorcycles, such as California, where lane splitting is permitted. Wearing a helmet is commonly required too. If you will be traveling to a different state, it's important to understand its laws regarding both the general rules of the road and what applies specifically to motorcycles, so you can avoid getting into trouble.

Motorcycles are a lot of fun, but they need to be enjoyed responsibly. You are in a greater position of vulnerability on one and, thus, need to make safety your top priority at all times. By taking proper precautions, you can drastically reduce your risk.
