What Is Considered a High or Complex Prescription?

There isn't one universal number where a prescription suddenly becomes “high.”

For sports eyewear, difficulty depends on much more than sphere power.

We look at the complete prescription, including:

• Sphere
• Cylinder or astigmatism
• Axis
• Prism and base direction
• Pupillary distance
• Difference between the two eyes
• Lens material
• Frame size
• Frame curvature
• How the frame sits on your face
• Type of sport or activity

For example, a -6.00 prescription with little astigmatism and no prism can present a very different manufacturing challenge from a -3.00 prescription with substantial cylinder and prism.

That's why the numbers after “sphere” on your prescription matter too.

Why Are High Prescriptions Difficult in Sports Glasses?

Sports eyewear presents optical challenges that ordinary eyeglass frames often don't.

Many performance sunglasses curve around the face. That wrap provides excellent peripheral coverage from sunlight, wind, dust, and debris.

But highly curved lenses can become more difficult to manufacture accurately as prescription strength increases.

Lens thickness can also become an issue.

Higher minus prescriptions tend to become thicker toward the edges, while higher plus prescriptions can become thicker toward the center. Frame size, lens shape, and prescription all influence the finished result.

The solution isn't simply choosing the thickest lens that will fit.

The goal is to find the right combination of frame geometry, prescription technology, lens material, and coverage.

High Prescription Wraparound Sunglasses

One of the most common questions we receive is:

"Can I get wraparound sunglasses with my prescription?"

Often, yes.

But there is a limit to how much prescription can be put directly into certain highly curved frames.

SportEyes offers several ways around this problem.

A moderate prescription may work directly in a full-wrap sunglass.

A stronger prescription may require a less-curved lens configuration.

An even more difficult prescription may work better with a prescription insert or another specialized mounting system.

That's why we don't automatically tell high-Rx customers that they can't have sports sunglasses. We look for another way to build them.

Understanding SportEyes High Prescription Options

You'll see several prescription symbols while shopping SportEyes.

These tell you how the prescription can be incorporated into the eyewear.

Understanding them is especially helpful if you have a strong prescription.

RX6 – Less Wrap for Higher Prescriptions

RX6 generally indicates a less-wrapped prescription lens configuration.

Reducing the curvature can significantly increase the range of prescriptions that can be manufactured successfully.

RX6 is therefore one of our most important options for customers with stronger prescriptions.

You still get sports-oriented eyewear, but the prescription lenses don't have to follow the extreme curvature of some performance shields or wraparound frames.

Our current high-prescription collection contains a large number of RX6 options across sports, sunglasses, swim, and other categories.

RX8 – More Wrap When Your Prescription Allows

RX8 is our more wrapped prescription option.

It preserves more of the curved sports-sunglass appearance and peripheral coverage many athletes want, but its prescription range is generally more limited than RX6.

That doesn't mean RX8 is “better” than RX6.

It means there's a tradeoff:

More wrap = greater prescription limitations.

Less wrap = generally greater prescription flexibility.

RXADT – Prescription Adapter or Insert

Sometimes the best way to handle a strong prescription is to separate the prescription from the outer performance lens.

An RXADT prescription adapter holds the corrective lenses inside compatible eyewear.

The outer lens can then provide the shape, tint, coverage, or interchangeable-lens function while the smaller internal lenses provide your prescription.

This approach can be particularly useful for:

• Ski goggles
• Tactical eyewear
• Interchangeable sunglasses
• Motocross goggles
• Dive and snorkel masks
• Other highly curved eyewear

It can also allow you to change outer lenses without purchasing your prescription again each time.

RXCO – Prescription Cut Into a Shield

Some performance eyewear uses a large shield rather than two conventional lenses.

With compatible RXCO systems, prescription lenses are incorporated or cut into the shield system so you can get prescription vision without giving up the basic shield-style design.

RXSTEP – Pre-Made Prescription Powers

Some swim goggles and similar products use step-diopter lenses.

Instead of being custom-made to your exact prescription, the lenses are available in predetermined powers.

These can be an economical option for prescriptions that work within the available ranges, but they don't provide the same customization as a lens made for your complete prescription.

If you have significant astigmatism or other prescription requirements, a custom option may be more appropriate.

Digital Free-Form Lenses for High Prescriptions

Modern lens technology has greatly expanded what we can do with prescription sports eyewear.

Digital free-form lenses can be designed around more than just the numbers written on your prescription.

The design can account for factors such as:

• Frame wrap
• Lens curvature
• Pantoscopic tilt
• Position of wear
• Distance between the lens and eye

This is particularly useful in sports eyewear because curved frames position prescription lenses differently than conventional flat eyeglasses.

High Prescription Ski Goggles

Ski and snowboard goggles present an unusual prescription challenge.

The outer goggle lens is large, curved, and positioned farther from the eyes than ordinary eyeglasses. Trying to turn that entire outer shield into a conventional high-prescription lens isn't usually the practical solution.

That's why prescription inserts are so useful.

High Prescription Dive & Snorkel Masks

Scuba diving and snorkeling are another SportEyes specialty.

Instead of being limited to basic stock corrective lenses, customers may have access to custom prescription solutions that can correct:

Why Does Higher Prism Limit Frame Choices?

Prism changes the way a prescription lens needs to bend and redirect light.

As prescribed prism increases, lens thickness and optical requirements can become more challenging. Frame size, lens shape, pupillary distance, and where your eyes sit within the frame can all affect whether a particular design is practical.

Highly wrapped sports sunglasses add another complication because the lenses are already positioned at significant angles relative to the eyes.

The result is that a frame that works beautifully for someone with a strong sphere prescription may not be the best frame for someone with a lower sphere prescription but substantial prism.

This is why we don't judge prescription difficulty by sphere power alone.

Prism and Wraparound Sports Sunglasses

Highly wrapped sunglasses can be among the most challenging options for prescriptions containing significant prism.

If a full-wrap RX8 design isn't appropriate, we may need to consider:

• A less-wrapped RX6 frame
• A smaller lens shape
• A different frame geometry
• A prescription insert on compatible eyewear
• Another prescription mounting technology

The goal is to find the best balance between your visual requirements, prescription limitations, coverage, and the needs of your sport.

Sometimes that means giving up a little wrap to get a much better prescription solution.

Prism and Prescription Inserts

A prescription insert can sometimes provide another option because the prescription lenses inside the eyewear are generally smaller and flatter than the outer performance lens.

That can be particularly useful with certain goggles and highly wrapped eyewear.

However, an insert doesn't automatically make every prism prescription possible. Prism amount, direction, prescription strength, PD, insert size, and the specific product still need to be evaluated.

High Astigmatism Sports Glasses

Sphere isn't the only reason a prescription can be difficult.

Astigmatism—shown as cylinder and axis on your prescription—can significantly affect which sports frames are practical.

That's why we don't think “high prescription” should mean only + or - sphere power.

Our current high-prescription filters allow customers to narrow products by cylinder ranges including up to 2.00, up to 4.00, and above 4.00 cylinder, as well as sphere power.

If you've been told your astigmatism is the reason a sports frame can't be made, send us the complete prescription.

There may be another mounting technology or frame that works.

Lens Thickness & Frame Choice for Strong Prescriptions

Frame choice can make a noticeable difference in the finished appearance and weight of high-prescription lenses.

Generally, larger lenses and extreme wraps can make certain high prescriptions more challenging.

A thoughtfully chosen frame can help manage:

• Lens thickness
• Weight
• Edge thickness
• Optical performance
• Peripheral coverage
• Appearance

That's why choosing a high-prescription sports frame by appearance alone isn't always the best approach.

Sometimes moving to a slightly different frame gives us substantially more flexibility with your prescription.

High-Index Lenses for Strong Prescriptions

High-index lens materials can sometimes reduce the thickness and weight of stronger prescriptions.

But higher index isn't automatically the best lens for every sport or frame.

Sports eyewear can involve additional requirements such as impact resistance, frame curvature, lens size, and the protective standard the complete eyewear needs to meet.

We consider the entire application rather than simply choosing the thinnest available lens material.

For protective sports eyewear in particular, lens material and construction need to remain appropriate for the intended use.

Prescription Inserts vs. Direct Prescription Lenses

Customers frequently ask which is better.

There isn't one answer.

Direct prescription lenses generally provide the cleanest, most conventional appearance because you're looking directly through the main lens.

They can be excellent when your prescription falls within the range of the frame.

Prescription inserts can accommodate prescriptions that may be difficult to manufacture in a highly curved outer lens and can work especially well with interchangeable-lens systems and goggles.

The tradeoff is that you're looking through an additional lens system inside the eyewear.

For some high prescriptions, however, an insert is what makes otherwise impossible eyewear possible.

The best solution is the one that works for your prescription and your sport.
